The wiki page of Chinese language, as well as the following two links from ISO 639 documentation, chi and zho, all tell us that chi is ISO 639-2/B, where the B stands for bibliographic, zho being ISO 639-2/T, T for terminological. The explanation of the B and T codes does not shed any light on traditional-or-simplified information the either.
Currently for Belarus, ISO 3166-2 codes are defined for 6 oblasts and 1 city. The city Minsk is the capital of the country and has special status equal to the oblasts. Each code consists of two parts, separated by a hyphen. The first part is BY, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code of Belarus. The second part is two letters.

Should I use ISO 639-1 (2-letter abbreviation) or ISO 639-2 (3 letter abbrv) to store a user's language code? Both are official standards, but which is the de facto standard in the development community? I think ISO 639-1 would be easier to remember, and is probably more popular for that reason, but thats just a guess.

ISO 639-2:1998 provides two sets of three-letter alphabetic codes for the representation of names of languages, one for terminology applications and the other for bibliographic applications. The code sets are the same except for twenty-five languages that have variant language codes because of the criteria used for formulating them. The name is a combination of an ISO 639 two-letter lowercase culture code associated with a language and an ISO 3166 two-letter uppercase subculture code associated with a country or region.
