The default subtitles for HBOMAX on my Roku TV are bright yellow with no background, so they're extremely difficult to read if the show has any bright colors. I've heard online that they can be customized, but I don't see an option for that anywhere in HBOMAX's settings.
Max is the new subscription video-on-demand streaming service from Warner Bros. Discovery which combines all of HBO Max with Discovery+ favorites. I checked an HBO Max video and the subtitles are stored in an .xml file, usually called "sdh.xml" and sometimes "sub.xml". As for Peacock, I couldn't find were the subtitles are getting sourced from.
